Dressage has once again provided plenty of finesse and flair to the thousands of spectators at the New Zealand Horse of the Year Show.

Entries are up and for the first time ever, they've had waiting lists for some classes.

Dressage New Zealand sport manager Wendy Hamerton says the standard is particularly high this year, and competition is heating up as titles are decided and front-runners found for the Dressage Horse of the Year crown.

The advanced title will be decided this afternoon and looks to be a fiercely-fought battle between Penny Castle (Manawatu), Brita Pedersen (Auckland) and Vanessa Way (Taranaki). The trio were separated by less than a percent yesterday in the Inter I, but that's no surprise as these are three very experienced riders.

The Young Rider of the Year will also be found tomorrow (Sunday) – defending is Kate Welten (Waikato) on Amajah, but this morning she was second to Catherine Tobin (Wellington) on Riverndell Romeo, who rode the test of her life to finish more than three percent ahead of the field. Tomorrow's freestyle carries bonus points, so only time will tell.

Vanessa Way (Taranaki) and NRM KH Allandro dominated to win the level five title, remaining unbeaten all show.

“Vanessa had really tough 2013, when she put her lifestyle on the line to try and make the London Olympics,” says Hamerton. “This will be one of her horses to watch for the future.”

Wendi Williamson (Waitemata) and Anna McIntyre (Bay of Plenty) dominated levels one and four, with Williamson winning level one horse of the year and McIntyre level four – each was reserve to the other in the respective grades.

Williamson, who also won the Prestige Equestrian Futures Prize for seven to 10 year old horses competing at level four and above, has been very consistent all season, while McIntyre is coming back from an injury.

Level three was owned by Laura Mead (Waikato) and Don Phillipo. This new combination have quickly formed become a formidable partnership. Mead tragically lost her horse Geishaan in a freak paddock accident just after HOY last year, and she was offered the ride on Don Phillipo from her good friend Jan Oram.

Rochelle Spiers (Central Districts) and her talented horse Vollrath Latimer – by Lessing, who is owned by the Vollrath Stud in Wanganui – took out level two.

There are three international judges at HOY – five star judges Peter Holler (Germany) and Susie Hoevenaars (Australia), along with four star judge Lilo Fore (United States).

Anyone keen to see the best of the dressage at HOY should make sure they head to the show tomorrow (Sunday) to watch the Young Rider Freestyle to Music at 9am and Grand Prix Freestyle to Music at 10.45am.
